Back in 2011, when
Facebook was starting to test Places and consumer collaboration
companies like TaskRabbit were really honing in on user
acquisition, collaborative consumption was still seen as an
experiment. We met with Qriously at TechCrunch Disrupt NY as they
came out of stealth to talk about “local”

take off as consumer mobile apps in a new space, where no one was
certain how successful independent mobile apps could be. Where are
they now?

Facebook has announced its
plans to move members of its engineering, sales, marketing,
communications, and design teams into a 100,000-square-foot
office in New York City.
The new space at
770 Broadway in Manhattan is nearly twice the size of the
company’s current offices at 335 Madison Avenue and will take up
two floors of an existing building that also houses AOL. Frank
Gehry, the architect known for designing Disney Hall in Los Angeles
and other landmarks, will design the interior.
From
the blog post:
To me, a really exciting part of all of this is the chance to
work with Frank Gehry. He’s currently working with us on the
expansion of our headquarters in Menlo Park, where we’ve seen his
extraordinarily ability to deliver an incredible quality of design
that focuses directly on people and enables the kind of highly

With more than a billion people using
social media around the world, it’s no surprise that everyone
from big businesses to individual entrepreneurs are clamoring for
the attention of an expanding online audience. While there are
riches and rewards for those who can build a loyal following over
which they carry influence, standing out from the growing crowd of
online communicators is an increasingly difficult endeavor that
requires strategy, talent, and a lot of hard work.
Whether you are launching a new blog or wondering why your
efforts are lacking impact, consider these strategies to write
content that can help to build your Web-based audience.
1. Tailor Your Tone
Attracting an online following starts with identifying precisely
who your audience is. No matter how wisely you choose topics or
wily your methods for promotion, if you aren’t speaking

Twitter
Finally Releases Vine for Android, Adds Zoom
(SocialTimes)
Twitter has released the Vine app for Android, giving Android users
access to the six-second looping videos that iOS users have been
able to post on Twitter since January. “We’ve been looking forward
to this day, and we’re excited to get the app into your hands,”
wrote Android engineer Sara Haider in a blog post.
The Guardian The new version has one feature
that’s not (yet) in Vine for iPhone: zoom. However, some features
are missing on Android, including support for smartphones’
front-facing cameras, hashtags, search and sharing to Facebook.
Mashable
Where Vine for iPhone maintains a somewhat Spartan interface, Vine
for Android offers a persistent menu just below the company

Google+ now hosts more user accounts than Twitter, according to
a
survey [pdf] conducted in March by Burst Media.
The study, which gained attention today when the analytics firm
eMarketer
dove into its findings, reported that while about a quarter of
users reported having Google+ accounts, roughly 16 percent said
they had Twitter accounts.
Facebook remained the leading social network by a wide
margin.
The data did not look at user activity, leaving unanswered the
question of how many of Google+’s accounts were generated by users
of other Google services. Still, Google has seen several promising
metrics recently for its long-discounted social network. For
instance, a single mention on Google+
reportedly drives more sales than one on Facebook. Google is

Taco Bell received some backlash from
fans when a Facebook user
posted a picture of a Taco Bell employee licking a stack of
taco shells.
Jj O’Brien Nolan of Ridgecrest, California had posted the photo
yesterday along with the message, “sure says a lot about your
employees, food treatment, and what they post on the internet.”
The company replied less than 24 hours later in the comments of
the original post.
“Hi Jj – We have strict food handling procedures and zero
tolerance for any violations,” the Taco Bell team wrote. “We
believe this is a prank and the food was not served to customers.
We are conducting an investigation and will be taking swift action
against those involved.”
This was not enough for some users, who aired their opinions in
the comments.

More than a third of U.S. marriages now begin with online
meetings and those unions last longer on average than than those
that begin in traditional ways, according to a study published
today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In a representative sample of nearly 20,000 people who married
between 2005 and 2012, the study found that 35 percent had met
online and just 7 percent were divorced or separated from their
spouse.
The percentage of marital break-ups was a slightly lower among
respondents who had met their spouse online rather than
off-line.
The study looked at all forms of online meeting, from dating
sites to email and gaming platforms.
Among those who met on online dating sites, respondents who had
met through eHarmony were most likely to be happy. Those who met on

Feedly, which makes an RSS reader vying to become
the go-to replacement for Google Reader, said today that it will
make users’ RSS subscriptions to popular Google Reader-based mobile
and Mac apps.
By the time Google pulls its category-leading Reader on July 1,
users will be able to access their subsciptions not just in Feedly
— which imports feeds from Reader and displays them in a more
visually appealing interface — but also in the apps Reeder, Nextgen
Reader, Newsify and gReader, Feedly said today.
“We are … hearing from users that saving their feeds is
not enough. One of the key features of Google Reader was that
they had an ecosystem of apps - apps that people loved
and depended upon,” Feedly said in a press release.
The company has actively engaged users in trying to determine

Facebook and Twitter are at the center of an ongoing battle to
control the social media landscape. To illustrate its role in
bridging the two social networks, HootSuite has re-imagined the two
companies as opposing houses on the HBO series “Game of Thrones.”
This infographic shows the major attempts of each company to block
the other and prevent media from one site from crossing over to the
next. The social media winter is coming, HootSuite says, and
Google+, LinkedIn, Vine, and Instagram are just a few of the
casualties along the way. See more in the visualization below and
please note that Twitter is
currently working on giving Vine users sharing privileges on

Digital ad revenues hit a new high of $9.6 billion in the first
quarter of 2013, up 16 percent over the first quarter of last year,
according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau
and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
“Consumers are turning to interactive media in droves to look
for the latest information, to connect with their social networks,
and simply to be entertained. This first quarter milestone clearly
illustrates that marketers recognize that digital has become the
go-to medium for all sorts of activities on all sorts of screens,”
said Randall Rothenberg, the CEO of IAB, an industry group.
Sherrill Mane, the group’s senior vice president of research,
analytics and measurement attributed continuing double-digit growth
to the “growing recognition by marketers that digital advertising
is a critical part of all marketing in today’s world.”
Of course, the chart also sketches out the tech boom and bust
cycles of the past couple decades. It also suggests that marketers

I noticed something troubling involving
many startup founders I’ve met this year: They suck and have no
people skills.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware of the fact that I’m an
asshole. The title of my last book was Social
Media Is Bullshit. Do you have any idea how big of an asshole
you need to be to put out a book with a title like that? But, and
this is worth noting: I am not an entrepreneur, nor do I have any
plans to ever be one. So, I can afford to be an asshole. My job is
to get on stage, make people laugh, and collect money. So, this
isn’t about me. I know who I am and what I want out of life.
But for you, Mr. or Mrs. Would Be Entrepreneur, you don’t

Apple’s
iRadio Plans Warm Up (Financial Times)
Apple is looking more likely to launch its long-awaited music
streaming service at its Worldwide Developers Conference, which
begins on June 10, after agreeing to terms with Warner Music’s
recorded music and music publishing divisions for the service known
as “iRadio.” Warner, the third-largest global music company, became
the first music publisher to agree to a deal for iRadio, people
close to the negotiations said, after Apple agreed to pay its
songwriters 10 percent of advertising revenue, more than double the
4 percent rate it earns from Pandora, the U.S.-based internet radio
service with more than 70 million “active listeners.”

The news comes one month after the company reached another deal

Jacob
Bijani, Tumblr’s first designer, has left the company, he said
today in a blog post.
Bijani first worked for Tumblr as a freelancer, beginning in the
summer of 2008. He joined the company later that year. He was,
founder David Karp said at
the time, “the first person we’ve hired who’s younger than me.”
Bijani’s departure comes just weeks after Tumblr was acquired by
Yahoo, which has a poor track record with major startup
acquisitions. Bijani nevertheless expressed optimism about Tumblr’s
future.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve all created together, and it’s been
a privilege to contribute to something beloved by so many. I can’t
wait to see what’s next for the product; I’m sure it will be
nothing short of incredible,” he said.
Bijani said he planned to take “some time off to digest the last
few years.”
