Video Recap of Weekly Search Buzz :: May 17, 2013 E-mail
Friday, 17 May 2013 02:00
Search Engine Roundtable >>

Very busy week at Google, mostly because of I/O but a lot of other things going on - it didn't help that I was offline for two days. We first discuss the ten changes coming to Google related to SEO, including softening Panda, an authority boost and the next generation Penguin update. That next generation penguin update is expected to be significantly larger than the first Penguin update. Google targeted another link network, many webmasters complained, but I am not sure which network it was. Google added organization schema support, but this only works in the knowledge graph. Bing now does auto suggestions for people names. Google discontinued SMS search. Google also dropped the translated foreign pages feature, for now. Want access to the new Google Maps, we have instructions on

Your Rankings Drop Around May 15th? May Be Due To Link Networks Google Busted E-mail
Friday, 17 May 2013 00:13
Search Engine Roundtable >>

On May 15th, Google's head of search spam, announced on Twitter that Google has taken "action on several thousand linksellers in a paid-link that passes PageRank network."

Google has done this time and time again, and we covered at least two previous cases of this. We do not know which link network - some are asking if SAPE links was hit again, but others are asking about a network named ghost. I am not sure. It seems like it may be several smaller networks.

One thing for sure is that around May 15th, many webmasters started to complain about ranking drops in WebmasterWorld. Here are some quotes:

Also, seeing a significant drop in ranks for a different domain I mentioned in another thread that I was using to test junk links. It's

Google Maps Will Allow You To Move Reviews To A Different Listing E-mail
Friday, 17 May 2013 00:04
Search Engine Roundtable >>

Jane Wang from Google announced in the Google Business Help forums that you can now make a request for Google to move your businesses reviews from one listing to another.

One of the most common requests I see in the forums is about when a business moves locations, often they have to create a new listing in Google Maps and all the reviews are stuck at the old business listing.

You can use this special online form to request the reviews move. But note, it is "only available for users of the new Google Places for Business dashboard," Jade said. She did say Google will make this more widely available soon.

Jade Wang from Google documents the "following criteria" that this would apply:

  • Change of ownership
  • Change in name
  • Out of business
  • Physical location (address) move

If anyone tries this, let

Thursday, 16 May 2013 23:49
Search Engine Roundtable >>

Google has dropped yet another search filter option from the search results. This one is named "Translated Foreign Pages," which has been a search option for a really long time in the Google search results.

A Google Web Search Help thread has Google confirming the feature has been dropped but Google said they do want to bring it back.

Here is the before and after of the search filter.

Before With Translated Foreign Pages:

Now/After Without Translated Foreign Pages:

Why was it removed? Hard to say, seems maybe a bug or something? Google's Kousha N. said:

This feature is currently unavailable, but we'd like to bring the functionality back in the future. I'll give you updates as I receive them, but for now there's no time frame for when

Google Adds Organization Schema Markup For Knowledge Graph Logos E-mail
Thursday, 16 May 2013 23:36
Search Engine Roundtable >>

Google has announced they've added support for the schema.org markup for organization logos within the search results, specifically not the search snippets but within the knowledge graph.

So while author schema will show in the search results snippets, organization schema will only currently show in the knowledge graph box.

Here is an example:

Again, the author image shows in the snippet but the organization logo should not. Here is an author image snippet:

Here is a code sample of using organization schema:

Do not confuse the two.

Gaining Access To The New Google Maps E-mail
Thursday, 16 May 2013 23:23
Search Engine Roundtable >>

As we expected, Google introduced the new Google Maps interface and features at Google I/O.

The new maps are no longer a "static map" but now the maps are "immersively interactive" said Google. Try clicking just about anywhere to surface more information and to make the map more relevant to you. Every interaction dynamically changes the map in order to surface information relevant to the location, search topic, and your search history. For example, if you click on a hamburger place on the map, other nearby locations and nearby food will be highlighted as well.

So how do you get access to the new Google Maps? You can request an invite over here, if this is not working for you, like some in the Google Maps Help forum are complaining, Google suggests you try this:

  • Make sure

How to Build a Google Analytics Tracking Code E-mail
Thursday, 16 May 2013 09:11
Bruce Clay Blog >>

How to Build a Google Analytics Tracking Code was originally published on BruceClay.com, home of expert search engine optimization tips.

Google Analytics tracking codes — also know as custom campaigns or UTM codes — are custom tracking parameters that, when added to the end of a URL, communicate granular information that tells you more about how your referral traffic is interacting with your calls to action. As mentioned, UTM tracking codes amend (are added to the end of) the URL you want to track insights for, like this: http://www.YourWebsite.com/your-CRO-landing-page-article?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=viral&utm_campaign=CRO-0513-JThompson UTM tracking codes can help you analyze traffic from banner ads, email newsletters, social media content, and any other campaign that links people to a property that you own (such as your website or your blog). Learn how to compose a Google Analytics tracking code, how to use
